Letterbooks, account books, and cash books of Henry Bromfield, 1729-1825.

Bound manuscripts detailing the business activities of Henry Bromfield, his father Edward Bromfield, and his son Henry Bromfield Jr., all merchants in Boston. Contents include five volumes of transcriptions of business correspondence [v. 1-5]; sixteen ledgers showing various invoices, cash payouts and receipts [v. 6-21]; one ledger used to tally and summarize amounts in other volumes [v. 23]; one volume showing letters, receipts and expenses of a merchant trip to the Caribbean by Elnathan Jones on Bromfield's behalf [v. 24]; and a volume comprised mostly of the settling of Bomfield's estate after his death, recorded by his son in England [v. 22].

The Bromfield family was a distinguished clan of Boston merchants who had first arrived in America in the 17th century. Edward Bromfield was born in 1695 and died in 1756. The beginning of this collection almost certainly reflects his activities in the trade of rum, sugar and molasses. His son Henry was born in 1727 and also became a merchant though his later dealings focused on the English trade in cloth, ribbons and sundries.
